In the Zone Distance Series
Lisa Schmit, PhD, CCFT, CPMP

Every agility venue has a class that requires distance skills. Whether it is Fast, Gamblers Chances or Jackpot, you are required to work away from your dog. Additionally, being able to work away from your dog opens up many handling options for any agility class or venue. There are many elements to distance training and I have broken them down into specific classes to work specific skills. We start out with the foundation for distance class. In this class, we go over foundation skills to teach distance! After this class, we have different classes to teach forward distance, lateral distance and layering, directionals at a distance, distance off of contacts and then put the skills together in a Distance Challenge Class.

Foundation for Distance Agility Class

The key to success is having a strong foundation. There is so much you can do to train agility and distance without agility equipment. In this class, we will go over my foundation exercises including detailed shadow handling, targeting using toys and target buckets, and using toys to teach cues. We will also work on foundation exercises I do to teach distance without agility equipment. We will use toys, targets and cones to work the groundwork exercises that will teach your dog to follow your body language, learn your verbal cues and understand motion that helps give them the confidence and information to work away from you.

In this class I will be performing these exercises with my puppy ! So you will see the actual learning process of how I train my pup. I will also use my advanced dogs for some exercises to show you that even very advanced dogs still need a refresher on these exercises.

All levels of teams are welcome…beginner teams that need to learn these skills and more advanced teams that want a “tune-up”.

During this class, we will cover

  • How to build and increase distance skills.
  • How to teach your dog to move ahead of you
  • How to teach your dog to work laterally away from you
  • How to teach you and your dog the cues necessary to work at a distance

We will be using targets, toys, cones, and 1-2 hoops or jumps to work the sequences in this class.

Open to all dogs over 6 months of age. Required space: minimum of 15x30. Minimum equipment; non-slippery elevated foot target (I use feed bucket), 3 cones and 2 hoops or jumps

Lisa currently has five Border Collies including a young dog. Four are competing now and one is deaf (Synergy). Running a deaf dog has brought a new element of training which has made her a much better handler and trainer. She has owned trained and completed with 12 dogs which have ranged from soft to hard and slow to fast and novice to multiple championships. This allows Lisa to bring real life experiences into her training that includes good foundation training, skill training, motivation and consistent, clear handling all in a fun positive way.

I am a consummate learner. I continue to take classes and attend seminars whenever possible. I continue to evaluate my training and adjust accordingly. I put on many seminars across the continent and in doing so, I meet lots of different teams with different issues. This has taught me to be open minded, to think on my feet and outside the box! I love to be challenged and to help people succeed.
